20 Percent of Women with Lung Cancer Never Smoked

A new study has found that 20 percent of women with lung cancer never smoked, suggesting that secondhand smoke may be even more dangerous than previously thought. Non-smoking women appear to be more susceptible than their male counterparts.

Chang said that because more men smoke than women, women may be more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke, even when they are classified as never-smokers

I can't understand our country and some of the people here. We can offer free medical attention for people that don't have any insurance or money from other countries but when one of OUR OWN needs help not one of those organizations, doctors or hospitals that so readily "volunteer" their services at no cost are no where to be found. Here we have a man that is a VETERAN for god sake and served/fought for our country so that we may have the luxuries and the oportunities that I don't see other countries have and what does he get for it? A royal slap in the face when he needs help. I am beginning to wonder if this is now the new "American" way to treat our own worse than others that don't live here. I lost my brother to Cancer and I am fully aware of the costs and also the devastation to the person it attacks and to the family and friends around that are helpless. Here we have a chance to help this person and let the man collect his winnings in the lump sum to help with his disease and I can't believe the unwillingness and heartless of the lottery commission. I do understand the concern for possible fraud but that can easily be determined. I do believe that under the circumstances that they can make a one time emergency allowance with the proper documentation if they really wanted too. But then again, it isn't affecting them or anyone of their familes or friends. Come on people...WAKE UP and do the right thing here and TAKE CARE OF THIS MAN WHEN HE OFFERED HIS LIFE TO PROTECT US AND OUR FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU and I do hope that someone will wake up and give him his due.

It is high time the state step up to the plate, and help this man. He has already given more to his country than money can buy. He has given the best years of his life, and now is the time to be the kind of state that takes care of it's citizens and give this man what he won fairly. And not cause his early demise by being so legalistic that his life can not be saved because the state would not turn over the winnings in a lump sum so that he can receive the chemo he so desperately needs.

Very very good blog, my gf mother had cancer and i know how someone suffers when they lose someone close and not only that how the person that has cancer goes through it, it makes me sad to even read about cancer, because i wouldnt even want my enemy to have cancer, a very disburting disease that not only kills a person but affects the whole family.

The person not necessarily must be smoker... But, if the person is smokers, don’t often recognize a sign and symptom of lung cancer because the sign may be subtle. Often times a smoker develops what is called smoker’s cough. This cough is persistent and can be for several years.

Thanks for all the info. More people need to be made aware of this GOOD information.Im so glad I found this post!

Interesting!! tHANKS !!

All about Lung Cancer

This is not surprising to me. An excerpt from www.researchmesotheliomacancer.com says

"Data from the Feb. 10 2007 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology released show that lung cancer among non-smokers is more prevelant than originally thought, with women more at risk than men. The researchers used data sources that compiled over 1
million individuals between the ages of 40 to 79 from the United States and Sweden. What they found was startling. On average, 14.4 to 20.8 cases per 100,000 person-years were from never-smoking women. The data was a bit more promising for men with only 4.8 to 13.7 cases per 100,000 person years. However, this is alot less for current smokers who contract cancer at rates 10 to 30 times these numbers."
